Meetings

JEDI meetings

During JEDI meetings, we come together as a departmental community and discuss—on an alternating schedule—JEDI-relevant topics as well as activities of the MSE JEDI Initiative.

Meetings are held every other Wednesday at 1:30–2:30 PM and are open to all students, faculty, and staff.
Currently, JEDI meetings are held in a hybrid format: both in Thurston Hall 409A, as well as via Zoom.
During the spring term 2024, meetings are scheduled for:

  • January 17: JEDI meeting
  • January 31: JEDI meeting
  • February 14: JEDI meeting
  • February 28: JEDI meeting
  • March 13: JEDI meeting
  • March 27: JEDI meeting
  • April 10: JEDI meeting
  • April 24: JEDI meeting
  • May 8: JEDI meeting
  • May 22: JEDI meeting

Community agreements

When in dialogue with the community, and in all JEDI meetings, we work to adhere by the following community agreements (adapted from and inspired by Cornell’s Intergroup Dialogue Project and Prof. Corrie Moreau’s class ENTOM 4040 – Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEM: The Science Behind Bias Seminar, and iterated through conversation within the MSE JEDI community):

  • Listen actively and empathetically.
  • Use “I” statements. Avoid accusatory language.
  • Take space & make space.
  • Stories shared with you aren’t your stories to share. Share ideas instead.
  • Accept that things may remain unresolved.
  • Embrace discomfort!

Community support gatherings

On a complementary schedule with JEDI meetings (see above), JEDI hosts a twice-monthly support space for the community. The purpose of these gatherings is to provide a semi-structured, safe environment to engage members of our community in discussions regarding mental health, as well as establishing a network of support.

Faculty and staff are welcome to attend alternating gatherings (i.e., once every four weeks).

During the spring semester 2023, meetings are scheduled for:

  • March 14
  • March 28
  • April 18
  • May 2
