About
WE ARE DIGITAL ENTHUSIASTS
Break Through Tech New York works to propel more women into tech careers through educational programs, work opportunities, and community building. When the traditional doors of opportunity appear closed, we develop new doors. We do this because we believe that closing the gender gap in tech is essential to being competitive in the digital age.
The Problem:
The demand for technology talent is unprecedented. This need is coming at a time when the percentage of college degrees awarded to women is near an all-time high of 57%. However, the percentage of college degrees in computer science and information technology awarded to women is near an all-time low of 18.7%.
Our Solution:
To address this challenge in New York and serve as a role model for other cities, Cornell Tech, the City University of New York (CUNY), and a group of flagship corporations formed a public-private partnership called Break Through Tech. The main goal for our corporate-funded, multiyear initiative is to double the number of CUNY women graduating with degrees in computer science and related tech disciplines.
Our Promise:
We will raise our hands.
To ask tough questions. To give insightful answers. To offer help. We will start conversations.
We will raise expectations.
We will elevate each other—to be better at what we do and who we are. We will work hard, together.
We are a team.
We are dedicated to transforming the workforce. We are women and their allies.
We are in this for the long haul—for a marathon, not a sprint.
We will cheer from the sidelines. We will pick you up if you fall. We will celebrate with you at the finish line. And then we will start training for the next challenge.
If we want to advance humanity in general, as well as feminism and gender equality, women have to be important in all professional areas. It’s important for us to step up and say, ‘I’m going to be a part of shaping our future.’”
