Preprint on experimental trapped-ion laser cooling

We’ve posted a preprint on our recent experimental work demonstrating fast, broadband laser cooling of single ions to near the quantum ground state (i.e., with ions at their quantum zero-point of motion in the target mode about 95% of the time, corresponding to “temperatures” of order 10 micro-Kelvin above absolute 0). This work takes advantage of some of the unique capabilities afforded by optical techniques we’re developing to bypass physical limitations on a basic physical functionality for atomic systems.
